This super quick guide will help you find everything needed to get to your first event!

About Us and the World:

Dystopia Rising is a gritty and dark post apocalyptic world where every day brings a new risk. Survivors work together within the wasteland and it's settlements to skirt by and overcome the dangers of the wastes like Raiders, Zombies, Critters and even other survivors. From these exchanges and everyday labor they produce the means to survive to another day fighting tooth and nail for everything they have. Requiem is a home of second chances. A place where the dregs of society gather to turn over a new leaf. Within it's walls an uneasy alliance between its families which govern over Requiem and The Fold keep it together like a knife balanced on it's tip, push too far and the knife comes down and off comes your head. Requiem is the hometown of Dystopia Rising New York, based out of the real world Forestburgh Scout Camp, in Forestburgh New York.

On an out of game level, we are a community that comes together once a month to just enjoy having fun. We go outside and we play. We meet new people, we create new stories, and we allow ourselves a weekend to disconnect.

What to expect:

Our events begin with players allowed on site at 4pm. Announcements start around 9:30pm. The even will run through the weekend until Sunday at 12pm. After a personal and a camp clean up, you will turn in your character sheet and be on your way until next time.

Lightest Touch Boffer Combat

You’ll fight off hordes of undead (which we call zed), bad-brain raiders, and other threats that attack from the wastelands. When you get to the event, we’ll make sure you understand how to safely fight with boffer weapons.

Designed Modules

Throughout the event, you’ll have the opportunity to interact with non-player characters through modules (also called mods) that let you learn more about the world, and have an impact on the ongoing narrative. Your first experience will be the “new player mod” where you’ll have a chance to experience a mod designed for our New Players

In-Character Interactions

You’ll spend the weekend playing a character; a persona you assume to explore the world of Dystopia Rising. In addition to social opportunities with other players, you’ll have a chance to learn about our economy, and gain money and equipment to outfit your character.

Character Creation:

Creating your first character will require a few steps. Once you’ve covered those, you’re free to craft the costume of your dreams! You don’t have to follow this exact order, you can swap 1 and 2, or maybe you already have pieces of your costume picked out.

Step 1: Creating a concept

What do you want to be? A fighter? A healer? Do you want to dabble in science? Or would you prefer to let the world help you decide? Think about your character’s goals, how they got to Requiem, and what kind of roleplay you want to immerse yourself in.

Step 2: Character sheet

Use the Player Guide to help decide what strain fits best for your character. Take a look at the skills and professions. Take a look at the lore books for even more details about your chosen strain. If you don’t love what you chose, you’ll have up to three events to change your character.

Step 3: Design your costume

This is the post-apocalypse, almost anything goes! When designing your costume, keep in mind your strain and any requirements they may have. Use your backstory for inspiration as to what your character would wear. Thrifting can be a great way to get new costume pieces for a more affordable price. Add a little extra genre to your gear by making it look worn and torn.

Do not forget to make sure your gear is cool enough in the summer, warm enough in the winter, and comfortable enough to run outdoors for the weekend. Layers are highly recommended!

Step 4: Get your weapons

Start up a shield wall, join the front lines, or brawl it out 1v1. Getting involved in combat is as easy as finding an enemy and giving them a good THWACK! (But please don’t hit too hard, we don’t actually want to hurt anybody). Make sure you’ve got your contact/boffer safe weapon ready! If you want to be a gunner, semi-auto or single trigger contact safe foam projectile weapon are what you’re looking for.

NPC Shift

At Dystopia Rising, we say “everybody shambles.” This means that every player will spend some time playing the zombies, raiders, and other antagonists for everyone to fight. You will be given a 4 hour NPC shift for your first event.

Prior to your NPC shift, you have to take off your character’s costume, and leave all your gear either on your bed or underneath it (no one should touch your stuff if it’s on or under your bunk). You should put on the black clothing you brought, and bring your water bottle, as well as any snacks you might want during your shift. You’ll then head to operations and check in with the guide. Try to be at least 5 minutes early.

Your guides will take care of you during your shift, including telling you what costumes to put on and what statistics to use. They’ll also explain what you’re supposed to do during the modules. Make sure to keep up a good attitude, as you’re going to be entertaining the other players, just like they’ll entertain you when they’re on shift.

What to pack:

Now that you’ve got your costume, here’s some other things to pack:

Bedding
Food (refrigerator and microwave available on sight)
Water. Please stay hydrated!
NPC clothing (black layers to wear during your NPC shift)
Toiletries
Socks. Extra socks.
Bug Spray & Sunscreen
Red Flashlight. Requiem can get real dark!

Signing up for your first free event:

To join us for your first event, send an email to info@dystopiarisingny.com. Tell us who you are, if anyone recruited you, what your character’s strains and skills will be, and which event you will be attending as your first. Our team will work with you to help bring your character to life, get a character number created for you, and have you ready to jump into our new player mod at the start of your first game!
